- Some random career guidance test back in school suggested you are critical, have an analytical bend of mind and pay great attention to detail. Admit it, you fell for it.
- You used to score a D in Drawing and hated all the equations mugging (true story :D). Science and arts got ruled out. Was searching for an escape when a relative mentioned CA. You latched onto it and have regretted it every day since then.
- You want to inherit your family legacy in a very real sense. Of course, you are Gujju. And your father is a CA. So is your brother, uncle, granddad, nephew, his brother in law and his dog.
- You got enticed by all the talk of practical experience along with academic knowledge. By the time you figured out the joke, you were in your second year of articleship.
- You are from some God forsaken water starved village from the Rann of Kutch or whereabouts. CA degree sounded like the only reason you could possibly get a dowry.
- You are actually a psychopathic character who relishes the mental trauma of sitting through audit lectures and the raw pain of trying to memorize the ten reasons for convening an extraordinary unnecessary general body meeting. Your folks let you be as long as you restricted the torture to yourself and a few close friends.
Or of course, by some quirk of fate, you landed up in NM College in Bombay. Period. :)

For doing a CA, RoI is pretty decent. RoE (effort) is pretty frak-all though..
As far as i have seen, my sweeping generalisation is that of all people who do a CA, about 50% have no idea what they're getting into.
Once you're 'in the system' you either make it or you don't. If you don't, then the escape has presented itself (and I haven't heard of anyone slitting their wrists for not clearing the CA exams). Of the people who DO make it, there are two types - those who will like the grind, and those who wont. (IOW, those who don't have a life and those who do - or don't, but want to, but this is just IMNSHO)
Those who will like the grind are by and large the kind of people who are okay with the typical "Indian"/"Brahmin" lifestyle - go to work, come back, eat, sleep, and ensure this cycle for the rest of their lives. Stability and routine are their key priorities.
Those who cannot stand this usually do an MBA :-)
@ Shrik: yeah, agree with ur ROI/ROE difference. I would think that 50% is actually higher. The people who have a life and those who don't, that applies equally well for an MBA. Majority of us get into MBA for placements, salaries and 'stability', go on to lead "Brahmin" lifestyles, the few who can't/don't want to turn entrepreneurs. The difference is that you try and have a life when u r in the B-school and carry forward that pretense later in life :P
